Did i hurt it?!?!
so yesterday i was leaving work and i was getting ready th shift from first, and i accidentally went from first to neutral without the clutch... there was no grinding (you can hear any complaints from the tranny over the radio) which surprised me, but im still worried i may have hurt it. so, did i hurt it, or are my fears unjustified? thanks

You can go from any gear to neutral when you don't "load" the engine and you can engage a gear at the right RPM without any harm (without pressing the cluch pedal)......... but it's tricky!!!!! At the wrong RPM it will grind like hell!! At least that what I was doing on my Prelude and the transmision never complain!!!! Might be different on Forte but I'm sceptical. Anyway I do think you're a bit too paranoid! Copperhead KOUP SX |

RE: Did i hurt it?!?!
All a clutch really does is remove the load from the gears so they can be changed. You do the same thing when you release the gas, but the load is only removed for a second until the engine starts applying deceleration forces on the transmission. About 1/2 a second after you release the gas in 1st gear, there's no load on the transmission and you can pull it out of gear with no harm done. If you're really talented, you can engage 2nd without grinding, but that's where the 'no harm' story can change if you don't do it correctly.

RE: Did i hurt it?!?!
Only if you were putting the gear under load at the time which requires some good pressure on the shift lever, could you have nicked or bent the gear tip. If you didn't hear a clunk or feel a jerk from the car when you hit neutral then you are fine. I messed up my third gear that way on an older car and it always had slight issues getting into gear afterwards.

RE: Did i hurt it?!?!
you can shift w/o the clutch on any manual if you match the rpms properly, i never use the clutch in my truck. admittedly this is harder to do in a car with an engine that revs 10 times faster than our big diesels, so i don't recommend it...
