Speaker sizes and the such
Anyone swapped out their factory speakers yet? I know we have odd sized speakers, the front door are 5.8 in and the tweeters are 1.3 in, so we have to get mounting brackets for anything. Can anyone confirm that the front and rear speakers are the same size, or different? Actually, the speaker hole is more of a concern, I could only find data on the sedan and it's front and rear must be somewhat different. Talked with the guys at crutchfield and we were able to match the rockford fosgate r1653 with the rear in the sedan, but couldn't be sure about the front. these speakers are 6 3/4" but fit with a mounting bracket and the factory grilles still work fine. otherwise I have togo with the 5 1/4" which should be fine, but I want the larger speakers if they will fit.... bigger IS better, right? Wink

FYI, anyone thinking of replacing these speakers should know that your factory speakers are riveted in?????? why in the hell they did this I don't know. anyways they have to be drilled out and mounting holes have to be drilled for the new speakers.

any info that you guys have gathered about the audio system would be appreciated, thanks!

The speakers in my scion where riveted in too. Crutchfield is a little high, but their customer service is worth it IMO.

RE: Speaker sizes and the such
Here's a picture of my rear speaker... Didn't look up for the front, I'll explain.

I installed my Infinity Kappa Component in it. 6.5" I had to made the same shape as the original in 3/4" to be able to fit in my 6.5". Unfortunetely, my speaker are top quality, and driven by the original head unit, it really sound horrible. I got distortion at vol 22 and powerbass at low ... Those speaker were driven by an infinity 4ch in the past and it sounded incredible. So if you want to use the original head unit without any amp, don't buy top quality speaker, you'll be very dissapointed. It won't give what you want. For now, I prefer reinstall my original speaker in the car and wait for some aftermarket center fascia to reinstall my old kenwood excellon in the car.

My opinion really refers at using only the head unit without an amplifier.

Hope I help a little
I think the head unit doesn't give enough power to the aftermarket speakers without using an amp. I could be wrong too ... don't know.

RE: Speaker sizes and the such
All you need to do is buy 6.5" components for the front and 6.5"s coaxials for the rears. Then you keep the plastic collarthat the current speaker sits in, but use a dremel or other saw and cut the factory speaker out of it.

RE: Speaker sizes and the such
thanks for the replies, the speakers i really want are the rockford r1652's and r1653's. both are 6.75" but i think they'll work, one is component and the other is a two-way. they perform well with 25 watts so i think the factory unit will work for me. i liked the way you cut them out, i may take that route. thanks for the pics, it gives me a much better idea of what i need to do.

For the Canadians, (preferably near the GTA) I still have for sale, the Kenwood eXcelons for the front and back.

RE: Speaker sizes and the such
That was really very nice help done by you, I was searching for the same as I need to change my speakers. They are not at all working perfectly. The maintenance of speakers are really too tough and I think these would work perfectly for my car.
