I've had 2 oil changes so far and both times I've used Castrol, one of their synthetic blends, just as a peace of mind measure, not sure how much better a blend is over conventional oil.

My dealer said the 7,500 mi service interval is NOT the recommended interval, but that it was mearly the minimum needed to keep the warranty valid. Now, he may have been trying to get me to pay for more oil changes than necessary, but I like the 3,000 - 4,500 mi interval I grew up on, so that's what I'm sticking to. I just make sure I do everything the manual says to do at the specified intervals. (my gf's Acura TSX tells her, literally, it will actually speak to you and tell you to change its oil on a 10,000 mi interval and I think that is the craziest thing in the world!).

7,500 was an oil change and tire rotation. For a synthetic-blend, with tire rotation, it only cost be $30. That was a week ago. I'm coming up on 11,000 in about 2 weeks, so it's looking like a 10 or 11 oil change year for me. Crazy.

Dealer said they recommend every 5,000 miles on the oil change.

I use castrol for my oil change. I usually get it every 3000 miles. $40 isn't bad, they do tire rotations, check all the fluid levels and if low, they replace them, w/ a free car wash. I think its a pretty sweet deal.

Whaaaat???!?!! Sad

You mean you allow someone *else* to touch your car's exterior with filthy rags, cheap shampoo and poor washing techniques? That will only happen when either my car's older than 5 years, or I am physically incapable of doing it myself.

Gotta love the feeling of brushing your fingers along the door after you've spent the afternoon waxing the car.

RE: Oil Change ?'s
With the crappy weather quickly approaching and a non heated garage with poor lighting I really don't feel like changing my own oil...What I want to know is if anyone in the forum went to their dealer and requested a oil change, but brought their own oil and filter. Just let them be the monkey changing it. If so how much did it cost?

Oil Change ?'s... Interesting

Yo ecko,
Whereas using your own filter and oil might make you confident with your maintenance I doubt if any "authorized" dealer would share this confidence.

And even if a dealer went along with your plan I'm guessing they'd charge you the same amount as they would had they supplied a Kia filter and oil. If you stick to your plan -- which I think is somewhat misguided -- I'd say you'd do better going to your "non-franchise" neighborhood mechanic.

Kia isn't going to sell you substandard filters or oil. Stick with them for at least the first three or four changes and then determine your satisfaction as to the cost. So, I'll say it again, your idea is going to be expensive... and not well thought out. OK? Ray

RE: Oil Change ?'s
Ray,

Okay I made a 'lil mistake in my post....I got out of work at 7pm after working 13 hrs and then a one hour drive home....I said "Dealer", when I in fact meant to say "Mechanic"....After reading post after post, the word "DEALER" kinda gets stuck in your brain. Take it a little easy though. Maybe my question in your opinion or to someone else wasn't "WELL THOUGHT OUT" but this is a forum to ask questions. I tell my kids there is never any harm with asking a question, ever! Since you really didn't answer either of the two questions I asked in my post or provide me with any useful information all you had to do was say it probably wouldn't work, or just not respond at all.

RE: Oil Change ?'s
i've done it before where i took in my own oil and filter (had to have high mileage oil at the time), and took it to my local quick-change place...the cost was about the same
