DDM HIDs

DDM HIDs
Got my HID kit from DDM Tuning in the mail yesterday. Shipping was slow, especially for having to pay almost $15! Anyway, the kit looks to be very well put together. The extra wiring harness also looks well put together. All connections are covered with heat shrink tubing and they even supplied grommets to install in the dust caps after you drill the holes.

Instuctions with the kit are poor quality IMO, but they have some nice detailed (with pics) write-ups here --> http://ddmtuning.com/support/index.php?_...id=0&nav=0 If you look at the H11 install instructions, it has two different connection types, an A and a B. Our kits come with connection B that will be made inside the headlight housing and the rest of the connections to the harness and ballasts will be made outside of the housing.

I am going to try and install them tonight. Still going to be around 30*F, but the snow and rain has subsided for a while. I'll take a few detailed pics to go along with DDMs write-up. No real need for a full write-up.

Yeah, I got the slim ballast kit. I think it was $49.99 + $10 for the 55w ballasts.

RE: DDM HIDs
Was this the H11 or H11B? I'm confused now. I'm all ready to order! Smile

Do you have your part number for us?

Current original mods I'm working on:
1. iPod dock for console from an aftermarket iPod cable
2. Mood Lighting - one color (done)
3. Mood lighting - multi colors (done, trying to rework to make it cheap)
4. Exterior lighting front (secret) parts on order
5. Exterior lighting (secret)
6. Exterior lighting (secret)
7. Illuminated front badge (different design)
8. Push-to-change-color LED dome lamps (use plans from #3)
9. Removing silver SX rim inserts (someones already done it, looks great!)
10. Rewiring fog lamps to stay on with brights (dimmuborgir91 beat me to it)

The stock bulb is an H11B, the HID kit is an H11. The fit to the housing is identical, the wire connections are different. The H11B is called a "snap-n-lite" bulb. When you twist the bulb into the housing, the connections "snap" into the wiring making the connection. The H11 HID kit has wires that plug into the factory "snap" connector...if that makes sense.

Here's the H11B bulb.

Here's the H11 HID bulb (with protective plastic housing around bulb).

Here's the HID bulb without protective housing.

Here's what I ordered.

DDMHPH11-5000K DDM HID Kit Slim Ballast (35W or 55W)
Options: Wattage : 55 Watt (+$10.00) Bulb Type : H11 Bulb Color : 5000K $59.95

370-HID-8133-5486523658-HID Kit Wiring Harness $15.00

Subtotal Amount : $74.95
Discount : $0.00
Shipping (UPS - Ground) : $14.44
Tax Amount : $0.00
Total Amount : $89.39
If you use the install instructions posted in the DDM link above, the only differences are as follows...

Remove the headlight using 10mm wrench or socket to remove the two bolts on top of the light. Gently pull the light out of its guide slots...be careful to not scratch your paint while pulling the light out. It's a tight fit!

You have to drill a 1" hole in the center of the dust cover to allow the wires to pass through.

Hole drilled in dust cover

Remove the screw securing the factory wiring connector connector inside light housing.

Had to split this post...Stupid max post limit!
Slip blue and black wire connections into the factory connector, blue wire went on the bottom and the black wire went on the top. This will make sense after have the light apart. (not shown, but I used heat shrink tubing to secure the wire in the connector)

Mount the bulb in the housing, pass wires through dust cover and secure dust cover.

Connect wires to ballasts
[Image: DSC00744.jpg]

Install the wiring harness per instructions...if you go this route. Test everything before putting it all back together. Don't forget to plug factory connector back in on the back of the light housing and to turn your key to the run postion...otherwise your lights will not get power.

Finished install with wiring harness hidden.

Overall look

I had to lower the passenger side adjustment to get the beam patterns level. Overall, easy install. Hiding the wiring took the longest, but that's because I'm anal about stuff like that. The lights come on with no flickering and are fully warm (full brightness) in just few seconds.

Might put some silver stars in the fogs now to even out the whiteness. Not going HID in the fogs as I don't see the point...just my opinion though.

Great write-up!

(this forum should have a special section for this)

Ordering now Smile Thanks for the part numbers and info!

I might even get more anal than anyone and add molex connectors on the twist-access cover. Then I'll never get it done and drive around without headlights for a week. Big Grin

 The molex connectors sound good, but the supplied grommets fit very nicely and really seal everything back up. The way the kit comes does not require any cutting of the factory wires, so going back stock is always an option. Depending on where you add the molex connectors, this might not be true.

Thanks for the comments.

Does anyone know the bulb size for the fogs? If not, I'll climb under the car and pull a bulb to verify the size tomorrow. It sucks that Sylvania is so slow to update their bulb sizing guide. They are still only showing 2009 year models. Sad

I PMed Sal about increasing the max text and pic limit of posts. It's very aggravating when trying to post a how to. A how to or write-up section would be nice!

The DDM ballasts are the more expensive slim ballasts.

I ran the extra harness wires from the passenger side first to hide them under the intake scoop and ran the wires to the battery. I zip tied the wire harness to some of the fan shroud mounts to keep the wires hidden and away from hot or rotating parts. The bulk of the wiring is behind the drivers side headlight. If you install the extra harness, you'll see how much slack you have and where you can hide it.

I mounted the drivers side ballast under the headlight on a flat piece of the fender shroud. I mounted the passenger side ballast on the washer fluid bottle, which is also flat. I know the ballasts get warm, so I added extra two sided tape beneath the ballast tofurther off-set the ballast and to the keep from melting the fluid bottle.

The rest of the wiring was tie wrapped out of site.
