RE: OIL FILTERS ARE LIKE OPINIONS

I, too, change my own oil. However, my first oil change at 3K miles was a dealer "FREEBEE". I paid the dealer ($20) for my second change w/a tire rotation at 6K miles. The car, at the time, was in for a check up and some service actions and the price was right... so why not?

I'm back to changing it myself now. I did it a few weeks ago at 10K miles. All the following changes will be done every 5-6K miles. As is my SOP the ONLY filter I use (trust) is the K&N Premium/Gold (HP-1004) which meets and EXCEEDS all auto manufacturing specs. I can usually buy Pennzoil or Quaker State 5W-20(30) at a cheap rate and this is fine with me. I refuse to buy synthetics because it's not cost effective if I change it as often as I do.

Anyway, check out the K&N line of filters. One of the best, IMHO.

The K&N is made by Champion Labs (owned by STP). It is their old design. The construction is the same as the Mobil 1 and nothing special. The Wix design is far superior. As far as synthetic goes, I use it because it can handle stresses better, lubricates better, last longer, and improves fuel economy. The fuel savings on even a 5K change interval more than pays for the higher cost of the synthetic. So there is really no reason to use cheap dino oil in this day and age. Dino oil actually wastes money.

I want to change my own oil, but I don't know how...could anybody give me some tips or something on what to do?
It sounds like waiting until 7,500 for the first oil change is a bad idea....
Thank you

Sam

I will only go 1000 miles before doing the first oil change. Break in debris is the highest in the first 1000 miles. Here is a DIY from a forum I'm an admin for. It's for the Dodge Caliber, but it's the same engine: DIY Oil Change.

RE: Oil Change???
Could be the filters are made in Korea, like the car. I would stay with the KIA filter until you could get all the info on others that come on line for the Forte.
