Oil Change???
Now I know I have seen this thread either here or on another form, but I have never seen any clear answers... How many Forte owners out there are changing their own oil? If you are changing your own oil what oil filter are you using? This is the key question as I believe KIA is trying to get us by saying we have to use their filters.
P.S. By the way it is not just the use of the filter that is getting me, every time I take it to the dealer it seems to take about 60 - 90 minutes to do a simple oil change and car wash??? Seems a little long in my book... Thanks Joe Corsa Blue Forte SX |

From then on, the interval will be 7500 miles. _________________________________ Brad "Textbooks teach how to think in-the-box, the real world teaches how to think outside-the-box."

RE: Oil Change???
I do my own oil changes. I use Castrol 5w-20 and kia oil filters. I purposely buy my filters at the dealership so they'll have a record of purchases should I have any engine problems -- and document the oil changes in the small book in the glovebox. The filters only cost a buck or two more that aftermarket filters but I like having the purchase information at Kia. I don't care about time -- when I change the oil I don't rush it so I can do a good job!
I like my Kias with their 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty! |

Seems a little long in my book... you have to remember that they have other cars they have to work on as well lol and the Kia oil filter has the oil pressure regulator built-in, so if you DON'T use it, your check engine light may come on due to an oil pressure issue 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Premium 2.5L Boxer Engine 5-Speed M/T ( )12" Sony Xplōd 500W Legacy amp

Some have better ones. Fram definitely has the worst, and causes some issues with the engines in these cars that resulted in a TSB warning years ago. There is no requirement for you to buy only a Kia filter. If there is in order to maintain your warranty, then Kia has to give you the filter free of charge because of the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the Clean Air Act and general principles of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission Act. Read this from the Filter manufacturer's Council. There are fewer filter manufacturers than car makers. As such, OEM filters are made by aftermarket filter manufacturers and rebranded. From what I've been able to determine, Wix is the closest to and may even be who is making Kia filters. _________________________________ Brad "Textbooks teach how to think in-the-box, the real world teaches how to think outside-the-box."

I suspect your boss was showing you the bypass valve that opens when the pressure drops below a certain level such as during hard acceleration or when the filter medium gets clogged. Kia has nothing special when it comes to an oil filter, just their name on the one they sell. Next time you change your oil, cut the filter open and compare it to the picture on the side of Wix filter box. Then post the pictures here. I'll eat my words if I'm wrong. _________________________________ Brad "Textbooks teach how to think in-the-box, the real world teaches how to think outside-the-box."

RE: Oil Change???
So I got the WIX filter and used Penzoil Platnium Synthetic 5W-20 for the change. I saved the filter and will probably take it apart sometime next week. I will also be doing an analysis on the oil i saved as well as the Penzoil synthetic after some time. If all goes well my next change will be Amsoil. Thanks

I've been using the Platinum for 3 years on my Vibe and have been happy. Amsoil is good, but overpriced. For that reason, I'll be using Mobil 1. I would prefer using Royal Purple, but until they produce an SM rated oil, and with Kia's warranty, that won't be happening. _________________________________ Brad "Textbooks teach how to think in-the-box, the real world teaches how to think outside-the-box."
